That includes the t-shirt under your jacket, the hoodie you nearly wore, and standard athletic socks. Base Layers: The Skin-Side Decision

The Shell: Weatherproofing, Not Warmth

Uninsulated hardshells maximize flexibility for everyone else. Features that matter: pit zips for venting, a powder skirt, helmet-compatible hood, and pockets that close. Pants follow the same logic, and bibs solve the snow-at-the-waist problem for deep-snow days.

Mild spring day: light base, shell, done. Standard winter day: light or midweight base, fleece mid, shell. Genuinely cold day: midweight base, two mids or one lofty one, shell, plus the accessories that punch above their weight โ a buff for the neck and face, glove liners, and a helmet's warmth counted as part of the system.
